Posted September 12, 2008 – 12:12 pm in: Poker

Danish poker lovers have something to celebrate and this is after the Danish municipal court ruled in favor of poker, making it legitimate in Denmark as reported by the Copenhagen Post. The decision comes after the authorities’ discovered that poker tourneys do not contradict Danish gaming legislations.

The ruling comes as a blessing to Danish poker lovers and even more to Frederick Hostrup – Danish poker association president who was facing several charges of organizing illegitimate gambling contests. This ruling runs contrary to the Justice Ministry legal committee’s 2006 decision that poker comprised of unlawful gambling.

Henrick Hoffman - DPA president lawyer told the Copenhagen Post that the Danish Municipal Court ruling makes poker legitimate, poker popularity has witnessed a meteoric rise in Denmark and currently reports a following of up to 500,000 Danes who play poker on daily basis.

The Danish legislation defines unlawful gambling as competitions and games where organizers try to gain commercially at the expense of the players. Mr. Henrick added that poker is nothing short of prudent betting and smart engagement, “Victory in poker is determined by smart strategy and clever moves, despite of having poor hand” he added.

Prosecutors have 14 days to reach a decision on whether to appeal the ruling or not. Many Danish poker lovers welcome this move because it allows them the freedom to openly engage in a game that has long been confined to people’s bedrooms and other secret locations where the authorities have no access.
